What does it take to becoming a licensed insurance agent/producer in Illinois?

Here are the steps to get your insurance license:

  1. Complete 20 hours of pre licensing training with 7 1/2 hours being in a classroom for each line of authority ( Life, Accident, Casualty & Fire (property)) with an Illinois approved pre-licensing provider
  2. Schedule and pass the state proctored examination.  You schedule your examination with pearsonvue. The fee is $103 for one or two lines.  If you are scheduling a Life & Accident examinations, you want them together. If you do them separately, the cost is $103 per exam.  The same is true if applying for a property & casualty exam. The exam will have two parts, general insurance knowledge for that line and state laws exam.  You must pass both parts before applying for an insurance license.
  3. You will then apply online at www.nipr.com.  If this is your first time applying for a license,  you must provide a work history while applying.  The cost is $215.00 + $5.00 application fee.  Your license will expire on the last day of your birth month every other year.  You first licensing period could be as short as 18 months or as long as 29 months.  Example,  you apply on November 15, 2020 and your birthday is May 23.  Your license will expire on May 31, 2022 and your fee will be adjusted down because you are paying for 19 months.  On your next renewal, your license will expire on May 31, 2024.
